Husband drugged wife with child’s medication and raped her

A depraved husband has been jailed for drugging his wife with their child’s medication so he could rape her while she slept. The couple had been married for a number of years when he confessed to putting melatonin in her tea before bed.

She sometimes woke up to find him having sex with her without her consent. He told her he would tie her up in her sleep and take photos.

The shocking revelations led to the break-up of their marriage, a police investigation and court case. The 48-year-old changed his story and during a trial tried to explain his behaviour by saying she had a sexual fantasy of being awoken by someone having sex with her.

But a jury convicted him of rape, sexual assault and administering a substance with intent to stupefy her to engage in sexual activity. He has been jailed for 11 years. The judge said he had tried to explain his behaviour in ‘utterly incredible ways’ but had been convicted on overwhelming evidence.

“You are a self-obsessed person who endlessly prioritised your own perceived needs,” said Judge Timothy Rose. “There were violent episodes within the marriage and you repeatedly claimed you did not know what you were doing. You have failed to take responsibility for your actions.”

The victim, who cannot be identified, says she can no longer bear to say his name and the happy memories of her their life together raising a family had been tarnished forever.

Prosecutor Ms Rachel Drake said the woman first spoke to police in 2018. About a year before her husband had confessed to an affair and told her he had been putting a sedative in her evening drink in order to drug her so he could have sexual intercourse. He said he had done it a number of times after developing mental health issues.

The husband initially admitted to police what he had done. As well as waking up to find him having sex with her she also recalled waking to find him putting a pillow over her. When she questioned him at the time he would feign ignorance and say he could not remember.

The husband told the jury that he drugged his wife because it was her sexual fantasy to be woken by sex. He denied it was rape but he admitted she had no knowledge of him dropping a sedative into her tea. He said the photos had been ‘arty shots’.

The defendant returned to court to be sentenced on Wednesday [May 11]. Ms Drake read a victim statement in which she said: “I cannot bring myself to say his first name, it makes me physically sick. I associate it with him and what he did to me.”

She said she could no longer sleep peacefully but does not want to be prescribed any sedative to help. She replays in her mind his excuses.

“I’m living an absolute nightmare,” she added. She finds it difficult to look back on their children’s early years because he was part of their childhoods and she cannot take pleasure in the memories.

Judge Rose said: “Self-evidently these were planned and activated actions without her consent. They were an appalling violation of the victim.” He said the defendant should have been the one person the victim could trust but he had abused that.

“I’m quite sure there was never any reason to suppose you couldn’t control yourself and were fully aware of your actions.”

I’ve reached the conclusion you have no real personal remorse. I accept prison will be difficult and I accept you have issues with your mental health. You viewed everything through a prism of your own difficulties rather than empathy with the victim or appreciation of your conduct.

“The offences were driven by your own fantasies of having sex with your sleeping partner. It is clear your actions have had a profound effect on her life.”
