Isaiah Rashad says he’s ‘sexually fluid’ and is still ‘learning’
After a leaked sex tape in February raised speculations about “Heavenly Father” rapper Isaiah Rashad’s sexuality, the rapper is opening up on his on terms about how he identifies.
“I’m sexually fluid,” Rashad, who’s known for songs like “RIP Young,” told Joe Budden during an interview posted Friday. “I’m still learning about it myself … but basically I’m not in full control when I walk into a room of who I’m attracted to.”
Rashad expanded on his comments, saying he’s “more attracted to a personality. I’m attracted to the intellect,” and he’s not in a place where can put “a label on it.” The rapper revealed that after a few years of dating around and trying different things, he’s now in a relationship with a woman who “has a similar understanding of themselves in that way” and has helped him learn about himself as well.
Budden asked Rashad what the difference between sexual fluidity and pansexuality is and though the rapper wasn’t aware of what the latter term entailed, he said “yeah, I be attracted to people without knowing why.
Pansexuality refers to someone attracted to all people no matter their gender identity. It’s not to be confused with bisexuality, which means being attracted to more than one gender.
Though his close family, friends and the people that mattered to him were already aware of Rashad’s sexuality, the tape’s release still affected the rapper. Following the release of the tape, the 31-year-old rapper said he “fell off the wagon” and had to check himself into a sober living facility for two weeks.
He said he received a lot of support from his base and family, but the days after the leak he was in a “dark place.”
“I was just embarrassed for my mom,” Rashad said. “I got foul family members who were hitting up my mom, messing with her, trying to poke the bear and she’s sensitive to everything that goes on with her son, so that made me feel some type of way.”
The “House is Burning” rapper also revealed that his grandfather died from a stroke the day after the explicit video was leaked, causing him to feel at fault for his death. Despite the negative outcomes, Rashad hasn’t been thinking about the tape or the person who released it.
“It’s been a time for my family to come together out of everything, it’s been a blessing… it’s been a concentration of family together more than it had been before,” Rashad said. “If anything, I can’t be mad at everything about it. I always gotta look at the bright side.”
